Overcoming Self Doubt Walking Into A Yoga Class

anxiety busting daily practices new to yoga self doubt Mar 31, 2024

Self-doubt is a common feeling that many people experience when trying something new, like walking into a yoga studio for the first time to take a yoga class.

It doesn't matter if you're totally new to yoga, or a seasoned practitioner.

Self Doubt Happens

Here are some insights to help you overcome self-doubt in yoga class:

  1. Remember that everyone starts somewhere: It's important to remember that everyone in the class was a beginner at some point. No one expects you to be perfect, so be kind to yourself and give yourself permission to bring your curiosity and have fun as you learn.
  2. Focus on your breath: When you start to feel self-doubt creeping in, take a moment to focus on your breath. Deep, slow breathing can help calm your mind and bring you back to the present moment.
  3. Set realistic goals: Instead of comparing yourself to others in the class, focus on setting realistic goals for yourself. Many people won't be able to do a handstand or wheel pose (a deep backbend) in their first year, let alone their first class! Celebrate small victories and progress, no matter how small.
  4. Practice self-compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and compassion, just as you would a friend. Remember that it's okay to struggle and that it's all part of the learning process.
  5. Ask for help: If you're feeling unsure about a pose, don't be afraid to ask your instructor for help. They are there to support you and guide you through your practice. You can ask for clarification of a pose after class or to dive deeper, you can sign up for a private yoga session.
  6. Remember why you started: Remind yourself of the reasons why you started practicing yoga in the first place. Whether it's for physical fitness, stress relief, or mental clarity, keep your intentions in mind and let them guide you through your practice. This is huge!
  7. Practice gratitude: Take a moment at the end of your practice to reflect on what you've accomplished and express gratitude for your body and mind. Acknowledge the progress you've made and be proud of yourself for showing up and trying your best. 💜🙏🏽

If you keep these insights in mind during your yoga practice, you can start to overcome self-doubt and build confidence in your abilities on and off the mat. Remember that yoga is a journey, and it's okay to have ups and downs along the way. Just keep showing up and doing your best, and you'll continue to grow and improve over time.

Believe you can overcome your self doubt and you will❣️

It just takes practice, like everything else. 💜
